Welcome to the Department of Human Genetics
In our clinical genetics outpatient clinic and various interdisciplinary specialist consultations, we provide comprehensive counseling on all aspects of inherited diseases. Our Institute’s accredited laboratory offers a wide range of state-of-the-art genetic diagnostic tests. We also participate in the nationwide pilot project on genome sequencing initiated by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). The aim of this initiative is to integrate modern DNA sequencing technologies into patient care and thereby significantly improve diagnostics and treatment, particularly for rare and oncological diseases.
Our research groups are actively engaged in elucidating the molecular causes of monogenic disorders; in investigating fundamental biological processes such as genomic (in)stability; and in exploring cellular and molecular mechanisms of aging and age-associated diseases as well as tumor mechanisms and therapeutic strategies. Within UMG and beyond, we are integrated into numerous clinical and scientific networks at the regional, national, and international levels, where we work to translate cutting-edge research findings from the laboratory into clinical application.
Education and training are central to our mission. We are deeply committed to teaching medical undergraduate students, to the postgraduate training of future specialists in human genetics and certified human geneticists, and to the vocational training of biological laboratory technicians.
